Date: Jun. 23, 2009
Time: 8:30am - 10:30am
Venue: BEC Auditorium, 77 Tat Chee Avenue, Jockey Club Environmental Building, Kowloon Tong
SustainAsia supports the BEc breakfast meeting on Sustainable Procurement:
BEC Sustainable Development Working Group is pleased to have Mr Kyran Sze, Honorary President of Hong Kong Small & Medium Enterprises General Association to join industry experts from various sectors to share their experience on sustainable procurement. Participants can exchange views and learn from peers and leaders from their sectors. International standard will be addressed with the following key questions covered:
How is sustainable procurement incorporated into the supply chain management in terms of procedure, benchmarks, evaluations and human resources?
What are the major challenges in championing the cause and ideas to overcome?
To what extent is a triple-bottom-line policy embraced by private sector, particularly, among small and medium enterprises (SMEs)?
SMEs are vulnerable to economic downturn. Do SMEs, explicitly or implicitly, compromise the principle of sustainable procurement in the time of financial meltdown?
Are there any synergetic advantages available to the three sectors by joining forces, such as social enterprises?
Sustainable procurement is the process of buying goods and materials for businesses to businesses (B2B) on a triple-bottom-line basis, that is, environmental, economic and social. Simply put, an organization has to take into consideration other extraneous impacts besides its own economic viability when it makes buying decisions for
production. Sustainability is achieved when the welfare of all stakeholders is safeguarded and developed on a long-term basis. Sustainable procurement is modelled after UN Supplier Code of Conduct in line with the ten principles of UN Global Compact, which is a voluntary international movement to practise Corporate Social Responsibility by various sectors in the wake of globalization. Sustainable procurement is put in perspective by a three-pronged approach: public, private and the third or NGO sector.
